Properly Managing…Cable Management

So what is the best way to successfully perform cable management? In other world how does one properly manage cable management? Well, we say enough with the Shakespeare like line of question and we just get to the heart of that matter, and actually give you guidance on making cable management a little more…manageable.

The key to cable management is organization. Keep it in your mind that this may be the first time you’re entering your network based fortress but if you plan on keeping your job then your first visit to the control room isn’t going to be your last. With that in mind why not make things easier for you and your co-workers (if applicable) and make the place a tightly run ship a place that makes you feel welcome. Now when we mean welcome we’re not saying that you bring a sleeping bag and your XBOX 360. If you do that then your first day probably will be your last.

Anyhow, depending on the amount of equipment you’re overseeing it could very minimal to just darn near unmanageable, who’s really to know for sure? Until you’re actually settled in. Well here are some suggestions we have for how you should handle your cables. First make plans to design a diagram have that in your mind you can do a little work at the beginning but it’d be best if you waited and numbered the cables first.

This way after you get the numbering system down for your cables then you can really go to work on your diagram. It’s a good idea to have a numbering system your cables and where they go because in the event any disconnection or malfunction occurs there’s a system that you’ve established. By establishing a system you can determine a problem much easier.

Next, any cables that can afford to be hidden find a way to contain them if they’re not contained already. Having the company budget buy a raceway is a good method of making those cables scarce. It helps to clear unneeded clutter another plus. For the cables you can’t afford to not have out bind them up with Velcro or some sort of tape (for a temporary solution). Be careful with duct tape because it leaves a heavy residue.

Taking these precautions to organize will make it easier to keep your accountability of your cables in much better check. The diagram is an excellent idea too and don’t worry if when drawing the diagram you’re not Da Vinci. If you make at least a basic diagram that outlines what your cable configuration looks like you’ll be in a lot better shape than if you didn’t have one.

What’s good about a diagram is that a less experienced team member or someone new can use it as a reference if you’re out sick or currently occupied and can’t tend to the network at that very moment. This is the good old fashioned work smarter not harder idea. Knowing this gives you a start in knowing how to manage cable management.

When it comes to cable management you’re a person will responsibilities and an obligation. If you’re not doing your job nobody else can. But we ‘re not worried we have a feeling you’re going to manage.
